Thistle up the road
Last night was a bad night for sleep, lots of noise outside and Nanook kept barking, Wesley fell out of the window sill onto the bed repeatedly. I was trying to think art thoughts as I fell asleep, or tried to fell asleep. I did get some ideas for the mosaic to be tables I have. Colors ran though my dreams- lots of orange and blue, not generally in my color palate. I will draw out he bull’s head for the end table first. I really want to get that one done. I can see it and can not wait until it is real. You say bull’s head? Yes for MacLeod my mother’s family’s Scottish clan. Hold Fast. Bothher Mom and Dad were Scottish, they met in Scotland, my grandfather came here first and sent for my grandmother, they married and raised 8 children. There are only 2 left now. We really do need to have a reunion. In 2007 I went to Scotland with my soon to be ex-husband at the time for our 20th anniversary and I had a great time exploring Scotland. I had been there when I was young and heard so many stories. I loved Sterling for its people, Dundee because that is where my great grandfather taught art at Dundee High School, I got to walk through his classroom, which made me cry to think he looked out the same windows I was that day. Glasgow was so alive. Oh how I miss it. I felt at home, like it had been last weekend the last time I was there. Oh I have gotten off track. The mosaic tables… I have stained glass students that want to do mosaics so they are saving their scraps to work on something. Thinking October. They also want to fuse. Now that I have the second kiln it is possible. Did not want to cross glass and PMC in same kiln. Lots of people say it can be done but I don’t want to screw up good PMC. Also have friends that want to try so may be we will do a mini workshop some weekend with a bbq. Then I can share my great backyard.
The photos below are of the boys in the studio with me. Nanook is always near by and Wesley has found a box of antique glass he likes to sleep in. Crazy cat!

We have a lot of raccoons in our yard and after seeing Tom trap some I now know how to tell female from male. One little girl was in the trap, yes these are humane traps, and rolled over on her back when I walked up, it was hot out so I put ice cubes on the top of the trap. They started to drip and she reached up and pulled them through and started to eat them. She seemed so surprised that they were water. Maybe she thought they were rocks or who knows. Later in the afternoon she chirped and I took more over, she held her hands together to catch them through the holes. I tried carrots but she was not interested. Later Tom took the little girl out to the country to release her. I think he takes them all to the same place so they can find their family there also. If you call Animal Control they kill them so this seems a better alternative. They are cute with their robber masks.

Welcome to my blog! I have been thinking about starting up a blog for sometime but kept riding the fence. Finally decided what the hell jump in and take swim. So here I am. My name is Kim S. Joy and I am a stained glass artist and jeweler. I love working with glass and am happiest in my studio. I moved to this house in late May and there is a great sunroom that houses the studio. Everyone has to walk through the studio to get in the house. My kids friends all stop to see what I am working on and stop to chat. Nanook, our dog and Wesley, our cat help out as often as they feel. Wesley sleeps in a tub of antique glass, it is wrapped in paper for safety of course. How he finds it comfortable I do not know.
So come on in and sit awhile and visit with us.

My first post! Today I woke up after a fun day with my stained glass student Maureen. She always makes me feel better and more motivated. I have been trying to finish a lsit of repairs and UFOs for years and she suggested making a list of them and crossing them off as they get done. Well low and behold it is a working idea. The first day I did five. After working 4 hours we went to lunch at Glory Days which was a very welcome surprise. It rained during the day which put a damper on my yard sale for Saturday idea. Oh well there are other weekends and this way I can drag more stuff from the storage unit. I am a pack rat who is storing her packrat daughter’s things while she is at school in Florida. We both decided it is time to downsize more. In the last two years we have moved from 3200 sq ft to 1800 sq ft now to 1400 sq ft., 5 bedrooms and 3 baths to 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. The bathroom is a challenge with two teenagers at home.
So today I went to the doctor because my left eye is swollen and I have a rash on my neck for 4 days. Now on stronger medicine since last doctor visit Wednesday night. Hope it will clear up and not be as itchy. Left cheek is numb so that is weird. Still not sure whether it is poison ivy or just allergy to some crazy new thing. Cannot wait to be rid of it.
I am listening to Darcy Nair Bond CD “I feel my Heart Fly”, a wonderful hammered dulcimer artist from Northern Virginia. Also in the background is hammering as the neighbor’s house is being rebuilt after a house fire last winter. Tom, the neighbor has been wonderful letting me borrow tools and filling me in on the neighborhood. He has caught 4 raccoons in the last month, they have been relocated to a country setting far away from our busy road out front.
Well I am going to cut some zinc to frame a raccoon panel for my daughter Meagan. She loved the Pocahontas movie and Meeko the raccoon when she was young. Hope you have a great day and make some art in your life today.
