KIM S JOY STAINED GLASS AND JEWELRY
The place I'd like to go most to seek inspiration is Scotland. I know there is stained glass everywhere but I felt a drive when I was in Scotland in 2007. Might it have been because I felt the presence of David Ramsay Sellars, my great-grandfather, or may be I just felt in my element. I wish I could take a year off and go live there and bask in the beauty and history.

I usually begin a new work by clearing off my workbench of all the other projects to have a clear space to work. This helps my mind set to be clear of distractions. I tend to get easily distracted and then move on to something else instead of staying on task. Next I choose the pattern I am going to make and then go looking for glass that speaks to me for this project. Now it is time to choose the music that I will be listening to while working. And so work begins.....
What is your process for starting a new project? Share in the comments please. The best thing about being an artist is that I get to do what I love and can share that love with others, especially when teaching classes and workshops.
I am able to work in the medium of my choice and experiment and see how much I can grow and stretch the possibilities of glass. I get to meet wonderful people through teaching, many students have become long time friends, through commissions- many people willing to let me design and create a piece just for them and the numerous customers that have bought pieces from me. I amso proud of my work and how much I have grown as artist since 1982. I did not think I would be still doing stained glass 34 years later. There were years when my art was put on the back burner due to numerous moves and not having a proper place to work. Fast forward and in 2014 I had my screened in porch closed and weatherized so I could work in there. This was a huge change from the the garage space that I had to take down every day I used it in Florida, the lanai in Hawaii, the potting shed and room with no heat that I used in Springfield and the studio in a former prison. I have come a long way. My studio is my happy place. |
