People have asked me what is the worst piece of advice anyone has given me, this is easy because I encounter it with people often.
The advice was "it is ok to take patterns off of Etsy, Pinterest, Facebook and artists websites and use them. WHAT? NO IT IS NOT OK!!! So many people go looking for patterns on these sites and use the photo of the project as their pattern. Lots of problems with this: #1 it is stealing. I remind my students that these sites are for inspiration not copying.
Using a photo is so hard as a pattern. Anyone who has tried knows what I am talking about.
Even using pattern books is sketchy. The patterns are intended for personal use not for profit.
If we think about it from the original artist point of view... they invested time and talent into creating the pattern and someone comes along and takes that pattern or photo and uses it either for personal or profit and does not acknowledge they are not the owner of that design. How would we feel if we were in their shoes?
Copying is stealing.
