When you have a store many different organizations and non profits come to you for donations. Many do not realize the amount of work and time it takes to create a piece of stained glass and that being a solopreneur means you are the only person that does the work.
This does not means I do not support charities or non profits. I do!
The non profit that is dear to my heart is Wilson County Humane Society. The work, time and love this organization gives is amazing and heartwarming. All my dogs and cats are rescues or feral. My dog Fred was a rescue that was found on the railroad tracks in Goldsboro with his front legs duct taped together and there was no hair on his muzzle probably due to duct tape. He was 5 months old, food aggressive and fearful of human touch. As time went on he welcomed my touch and realized I was not going to steal the food I put down for him and stopped growling at me. Thank goodness.
I do not remember how I got involved in the Wilson County Humane Society. I knew I could not foster dogs as Fred is aggressive towards other dogs. How could I help? I could drive dogs and cats to vet visits, drive them to their fosters, take them to Garner to their Adoption Center and to the airport or pick up place on their way to Rescues.
I will tell you I became attached to many of my rides. Big Boy- the dog that had been chained to a tree for 3 years, was one that broke my heart. He missed out on being a dog that was loved in the formative years. He did not know how to get in the car to go to the vet, he did not understand what "good boy" meant. After he was done with his heartworm treatment I gave him his first bath- this boy was dirty from being outside his whole life- he loved his bath. When he was getting ready to leave Wilson and I was lucky enough to drive Big Boy to Cracker Barrel for his Freedom Ride.
I did keep one dog at the house for 3 days. Lu stayed in the spare bedroom and we had to juggle dogs to go out. Fred knew she was here and was not happy at all. We made and Lu went to the airport for her Freedom Flight.
I carry Big Boy in my heart. I also carry Ringo and Simba, Meatball and Edward, The Rug Rats ( 3 kittens), Jasmine, Jesse and Crystal, Lexi, Flip, Run, Lu, Helen- the blind and deaf beautiful soul, Fizz and Dundee in my heart. There were others but I forgot to write down their names (2 dogs, a cat and 2 kittens) and dates, I regret that.
How do I support Wilson County Humane Society now?
I have donated medications from friends that no longer need those meds ( like when Nanook crossed the Rainbow Bridge and I did not have a dog that could use his Heartworm and Flea/Tick meds, sell dog and cat books in my store and give 100% of proceeds to WCHS.
