Caring for Your Hands while working with Stained Glass
Before Work:
-Check your hands for cuts, cover any cuts with a bandaid
During Work:
-Wear gloves while moving glass- to protect your hand and to keep glass from slipping through your fingers
-Wear nitrile gloves while soldering to protect your skin from the flux, also it is easier to clean up with gloves on.
-Use Tools Correctly:
-Sweep glass chips with a brush and dustpan not your hands
-Take Frequent Breaks to give your hands a break
After Work:
-Thorough Hand Washing:
-Use a nail brush to clean under nails.
-Use degreasingsoap to remove all chemical, if you don’t wear nitrile gloves
-Check for Cuts/Splinters:
-Inspect for tiny glass shards or cuts and treat with antiseptic.
-Moisturize Hands:
-Apply a thick unscented hand cream or ointment
-Avoid Touching Face: wash hands before eating or touching mouth/eyes.
Lead Safety:
-Wash Hands After Handling Lead (cames or solder)
-Keep Workspace Clean and wipe down surfaces.
-Avoid Dry Sanding or Grinding glass or lead- use proper ventilation and masks.
