Commission Work by Kim S Joy

I have been doing commission work since 2005. When people approach me to do a piece for them we start with a conversation to find out the direction, placement, style and colors they are looking for. May times there are changes throughout the project but that is what will make it yours and yours alone. Lines of communication are open all during the process as this is your piece not mine. I want you to walk away knowing and feeling that your truly own this piece, not me, the artist that brought your idea to life

My Story

I started working in stained glass in 1982. My work has evolved over the years. I love pushing the glass to find out what it wants to be. Since glass is made up of molecules it is truth alive and must be treated that way.
I have had home studios, a studio in an art center and now a storefront in a Historic Southern Town called Wilson.
I started teaching stained glass classes in 2004 and have never stopped. I believe my legacy is to leave more stained glass artists here than when I started. Lofty dream which I am working hard on.
Doing Commission work, each piece is special to me. From the transoms, Military Retirement pieces, sidelights, windows, kitchen cabinet doors, room dividers, lanterns for yard, garden art, Logo pieces for non-profits, Memorials and more.
I look forward to each Commission and working with the people that commission me to work with them. Over the course of the project it is an experience we will all remember.

Types of Commissions

Past commissions include:
-inserts for doors with plain glass inserts
- transoms for above doors and large windows to allow light in if drapes are drawn
-sidelights on either side of the door to add color and privacy,
-windows for bathrooms that also add color and afford privacy
-windows in kitchens above the sink to help with privacy
-lampshades to match room decor both color and style
-garden art

Commission Process

1) Meet with Kim to discuss your vision and desire
2) Preliminary Quote (subject to change pending approval of final design) 10% Design Retainer is due upon acceptance of Preliminary Quote.
3) A scaled colored rendering of the design will be provided within four weeks of Design Retainer.
4) A meeting will be scheduled for review and finalizing design, this is the point of if changes are to be made they will be made. You will choose glass at this point.
5) The Final Quote of the Project will be presented. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required upon acceptance of Final Design and Quote. The timeline will be laid out.
6) You are welcome to come visit during the creation of your piece, Kim will take photos throughout creation to keep you up to date on progress.
7) When piece is completed you will pick up and transport your piece to your home. Final Payment is due at this time.
8) Installation of the piece is be provided by you, unless otherwise agreed to.

Care of your Commission

Each piece has been sealed with a waxy sealer that is applied in a spray liquid form that has been left to dry and buffed and polished with a soft, dry towel. It is not recommended to use window cleaner or other chemicals on any stained glass as they may damage lead, solder, glass and integrity of the piece.
