Last night I was trolling on YouTube and ended up in the rabbit hole of "How to do stained glass" videos. Oh my! There was quite the array of people giving advice and "teaching". Some were fine but others I wish they would not put misinformation up for unknowing people to watch and think this is the way to work in stained glass.
I will not name any channels as I am not the YouTube Police. When picking a video to watch, look at all the videos they have made pertaining to stained glass. Chances if it is 6 months or 2 years you will not get time proven and knowledge based information. Beware the watcher! Look for people who have been in the business for longer and have a variety of videos covering aspects of the art form.
I saw pregnant women soldering. Did they consult their doctor? I always ask any pregnant women that sign up for a class to speak to their doctor and get an "ok it is safe" from that doctor.
So many have food beside them while they work. Not in my studio or classroom. You can transfer lead, flux and glass dust from your hands to your food to your body. No eating allowed while working on stained glass!
Unsafe studio practices- www.youtube.com/@LightLeadedDesignsholding cutters, tools and soldering irons. Dumping grinder water in the toilet or down the sink. Oh my! Your plumber will love you but your wallet will not. The glass binds to the pipes, builds up over time and clogs the pipes causing hundreds if not thousands of dollars of damage.
I do have a YouTube Channel but do not have that many videos up because I dislike talking to the camera. I need to get over that. I want good and knowledgeable information out there.
Here are Channels I trust with their information:
Everything Stained Glass
Derek Hunt
Eds Emporium Art Glass Studio
Jan Czugalinski
And of course my channel which is still a work in progress but this might be the kick in the pants I needed.
